PPL Flight Training Blog

Here’s the latest installment in a PPL flight training blog by current Multiflight PPL student Adam Rahnavard.  The weather is causing some disruption to Adam’s training for his Private Pilot’s Licence at the moment, but there’s still plenty for Adam to focus on.  Read here what he’s been up to over the last couple of weeks:

“The typical British weather is the one thing as a budding aviator you can’t do much about and unfortunately February has fallen mostly to wet and windy weather from the Atlantic so grounding my lessons. This is very frustrating but as I have said before is down to safety. However, even if the lesson can’t go ahead there is still plenty to do given there are 8 exams to pass successfully with no other option than to hit the books as part of the PPL course! The exams include: Air Law, Meteorology, Human Performance, Aircraft Technical, Flight Planning and Performance, Navigation and also a paper on communication. The latter is one half of the Radio Licence that can be obtained by attending and passing Malcolm’s course on Radio Telephony based at the Multiflight flying school at Leeds Bradford International Airport. The other assessment is a practical where you are examined on your ability to converse with air traffic control.

PPL Exams

My instructor Paul did advise me when I started that exams must be a priority for a few key reasons: You get more out of the lessons, stay safe and the sooner you finish them all the sooner you can focus just on flying as the test and cross country approaches. I took this advice seriously and hit the books early on. Paul also advised rightly that the weather can hold us back from time to time in the winter season and this was a great time to revise and pass the exams. Up until this Saturday just gone I had passed all except Flight Planning and the Navigation exam. Well on Saturday I took my Flight Planning exam and passed which was pleasing: I now just have Navigation to do.

Flight Training Support

There are a number of books out there to help but I used and would recommend the ‘Trevor Thom’ series that has a text book for each subject covering all the syllabus. These books can be purchased from Multiflight along with advice and guidance on how to approach the study. A couple of times with each subject there were a few points I needed further clarifying and every time either my instructor or another member of the Multiflight team were happy and willing to talk though the theory. This was a big help and reassuring to know that I had support when I needed it which certainly played its part in learning the material.

Having just the Navigation exam to go is a great feeling. It does not seem two minutes since I had the whole lot to do. It was a bit of a challenge getting going as I had not revised for or sat an exam in 10 years but soon got into it and I’m on a roll now!

It’s one step at a time but as things stand I have completed 29 hrs flight training, gone solo and passed 7 out of the 8 PPL exams. When I look at it this way when a lesson falls victim to the weather it puts it back in perspective and already gives you achievements to be proud of. The support at the Multiflight Flight Training Centre really helps you keep going and working hard as nearly everyone you come into contact with at the Leeds flying school was where I am now at one point and all say the same thing in terms of how to tackle the whole course and make good progress with my Private Pilot’s Licence which seems a bit nearer now……”
