Multiflight Finance Director shortlisted for Yorkshire Finance Director of the Year Awards

The Finance Director of Multiflight has been shortlisted for the 2009 Yorkshire Finance Director of the Year Awards.

Miles Beecham has been shortlisted for the annual awards, which are sponsored by Sewell Moorhouse, Ernst & Young and Hammonds.

“I am delighted to have been nominated and then shortlisted for the Yorkshire Finance Director of the Year Awards and feel it reflects the success of Multiflight as a leading UK private aviation company and the continued growth of the company over recent years, and the part I have played in this,” says Miles.

The awards recognise the key contribution and exceptional performance of the region’s top Finance Directors. The awards scheme, now in its eighth year, has established itself as the leading competition of its kind in Yorkshire.

The winners of the awards for Best Finance Director of a PLC, Best Finance Director of a private Ltd company, Best Finance Director of an SME, Young Finance Director of the Year, and Outstanding Achievement Award, will be announced at an exclusive awards dinner at Rudding Park, Harrogate, in September.

Miles was appointed to Multiflight’s Board of Directors as Finance Director in January 2008. Miles, who started his career with Birmingham accountancy firm PKF working in audit and then as a corporate tax specialist, had been Multiflight’s Financial Controller and Company Secretary since 2002.

Multiflight-sponsored motor racing star Jon Lancaster shows what he’s made of

The Multiflight-sponsored racing driver Jon Lancaster from Calverley, Leeds, has claimed his first Formula Renault 3.5 win.

He took his maiden World Series by Renault victory with a faultless, light to flag win in the first two races at Portimao in the Algarve on Saturday August 1st. The 20-year-old started from pole position, his second of the season, and held off a fierce challenge from championship leader Bertrand Baguette and new Torro Rosso F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari.

Steve Borrowdale, Managing Director of Multiflight, said: “This was a great win for Jon and everyone here at Multiflight is delighted with his progress in the World Series by Renault.”

In just his fourth appearance in the 3.5 litre Comtec Racing car, Jon made a great start to lead into the first corner where Chris van der Drift and Dani Clos collided. The first of two safety car periods occurred on lap two when British Formula 3 championship leader Daniel Ricciardo's car was retrieved after a collision with Julian Leal.

At the restart, Jon, a British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star, got the jump on Baguette who was right on his tail, the battle set to continue right to the flag. Despite the deployment again of the safety car when three cars collided on lap 14, the Leeds driver was more than up to the job. He held his nerve over the remaining 21 laps to take an emotional victory which he dedicated to his girlfriend’s late mother, Eileen Hillas, who recently passed away.

“It was a complicated race and wasn’t at all easy,” said Jon. “I built up a lead at the start and after about three laps I started to push but my rear tyres went off very quickly. After the safety car I concentrated on staying focused and consistent in an attempt to keep Baguette behind.

“This worked every time until I made a small mistake when he had a good look at getting past. But this was my race and I wasn’t giving it up. We’re getting faster with every race; fastest lap in the second at Silverstone, first pole position in the third at Le Mans and now a maiden win in the fourth. I’d like to dedicate this win to my girlfriend’s mum who sadly passed away last week.”

Jon’s father Charles was quick to praise the hard work and efforts of the Comtec Racing team. He said: “Jon drove a superb race and deserved that win after his performances this year. I’d like to say a big thank you to everybody at Comtec Racing team for all their hard work, it’s been worth it.”

Race two proved more than frustrating, after an incident with Fairuz Fauzy which damaged Jon’s front wing and pitched him into a spin, and resulted in being hit by Anton Nebylitsky in the final stages of the race. Despite the disappointing end to the day, Jon heads into the next rounds of the championship, at the Nürburgring over the weekend of 19/20 September, confident of another strong showing.

“With the consistent pace we’ve shown in the last four rounds, I’m really looking forward to the Nürburgring. It’s a track I know very well and on which I’ve won in the past so it should be a good circuit for me. The team also knows it well and with the pace we have now got there is no reason why we can’t be looking for another win.”

Multiflight has sponsored Jon since 2007, when he competed in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, the global single-seater racing series which has been the stepping stone into F1 for many drivers including Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Scott Speed.

Jon’s promise as a racing driver was spotted when, at the age of thirteen, he was singled out by the same talent-spotter who discovered Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button. Prior to graduating to single seater racing cars, Jon was one of just a dozen professional kart drivers in the world. In 2006 he was number one in the world karting rankings. Drivers such as Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Ayrton Senna and Fernando Alonso started out with brilliance in the karting arena, just like Jon.

Become a professional helicopter pilot at Multiflight

You can now train as a professional helicopter pilot at the Multiflight Flight Training Centre following the launch of our CPL(H) flight training course.

Anyone looking to fly a helicopter for remuneration needs to hold a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (Helicopters). The CPL(H) is the professional licence that allows the holder to work as a helicopter pilot and perhaps to work with a charter fleet, such as Multiflight’s helicopter charter fleet, to fly a helicopter with the oil industry, or to get a job as an instructor if you do a Flying Instructor Rating.

The CPL(H) can be undertaken either as an Integrated or as a Modular course. Here at Multiflight we are approved to run Modular helicopter flying training courses.

We are perfectly positioned for commercial pilot helicopter training, as we are located at an international airport and so you will get used to flying in and out of controlled airspace while doing your training with us.

There are minimum course requirements that you must meet in full to start your CPL(H) training. These include a total of 155 helicopter flying hours: this must include 50 Pilot in Command flying hours; a valid JAR Class 1 medical, and you must also have completed and passed all theoretical knowledge exams.

Train as a professional helicopter pilot with Multiflight.

Multiflight helicopter charter pilot Chris Wood had the lucky task of flying not just one bride, but four, when he visited a wedding fair at The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel and Spa at Bolton Abbey.

The four brides, wedding fair models, enjoyed a flight around the Bolton Abbey area in the Multiflight charter B206 III Jetranger helicopter with Chris as their pilot.

The Multiflight Charter Department, which offers helicopter and aeroplane charters, was exhibiting at the wedding fair.

Multiflight celebrates being voted top-ranking European FBO

Multiflight is celebrating after beating off competition from major fixed based operations across Europe to become a top-ranking European FBO.

Multiflight has been voted one of Europe’s leading FBO facilities by qualified, aircraft operating readers of European Business Air News (EBAN). Multiflight, which handles all private aviation and business flights at Leeds Bradford Airport, has been awarded third place in the EBAN survey, placing it above many much larger FBO facilities at airports across Europe. These include Stockholm, Geneva, Paris, Cannes, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Zurich, London and Dubai.

First place in the survey went to Palma de Mallorca: Mallorcair, and second place to Farnborough: TAG London Farnborough Airport.

“To be ranked third in the whole of Europe as an FBO facility, when facing competition from much bigger airports with far greater traffic movements, is a major achievement for Multiflight and the FBO team,” says Heather Cawthorne, Handling Manager.

“This is a major success story for a West-Yorkshire based business. Being voted third European FBO makes us extremely proud: our top ranking is testament to the dedication and hard work of the FBO team and our great attention to clients’ needs.”

Heather says that a strong focus on service and always going that extra mile for clients is what helped secure the top ranking for Multiflight.

Nothing is ever too much trouble for the FBO team. They have been known to search the length and breadth of Yorkshire for a particular wine for a client, and also to send a taxi to collect a newspaper after failing to locate it locally for another client.

“We always aim to please and our continuing growth and traffic numbers are an indication that our clients value the quality of service we provide: as too, of course, is being voted the third FBO in Europe. Private travel continues to increase in popularity as people recognise just how time and cost-effective it can be.”

Multiflight regularly handles calls from emergency ambulance crews and is always on stand-by to get extra staff in, whatever the hour, to deal with these calls.

“While many of the flights we deal with are pleasure and business flights, we also handle emergency ambulance flights and it is imperative that we offer a responsive service,” says Heather.

The FBO, which caters for all sizes of aircraft, from light aircraft to VIP business jets and 757s, features a dedicated taxiway from the apron and two barrel-vaulted hangars covering 6,300 square metres that are able to house four Boeing 737-800 sized aircraft.

The FBO has been established for over eight years and has grown into a busy, successful operation. It has been transformed as part of a multi-million pound investment by Multiflight in the South Side of the airport. The FBO facilities were refurbished, providing luxury lounge facilities, followed by the Multiflight Café Bar and the Flight Training Centre. Multiflight is now one of the finest facilities of its kind in Europe.
