The Ryder Cup is a golfing trophy, donated by Samuel Ryder, which is presented biennially in an event named the “Ryder Cup Matches” between teams from the United States and Europe. The venue for the event alternates between courses in Europe and the United States.
The competition started after an exhibition match that was staged in 1926 between a team of American professionals against a similar team from British PGA and played on the East Course at Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey. The first contest was staged in 1927.
The earlier matches between these two sides were fairly even. However, following the Second World War, repeated dominance by the US led to a decision being made to extend representation of the British/Irish side in 1979 to include continental Europe. This change came about partly due to the success of the new generation of Spanish golfers at this time. Spaniards Antonio Garrido and Seve Ballesteros played in the event in 1979. Since that year the European team has featured players from France, Denmark, Italy, Germany and Sweden.
