80th anniversary of Leeds Bradford International Airport is celebrated in style
October 18, 2011
A special date for Leeds Bradford International Airport was marked in fine style yesterday, Monday October 17th, with flyovers, an exhibition opening and a book launch. Multiflight joined in the celebrations and enjoyed watching the flyovers, which took place during the day, and attending an event at the airport.
The 80th anniversary celebrations of LBIA started just after noon when two Belgian F16 fighter planes did four flyovers. This marked the anniversary and also honoured the 609 Squadron Auxiliary Airforce, which was based at the airport.
During the day there were flyovers by a Tucano aircraft, a Tornado jet and a VC 10.
An 80th anniversary exhibition, featuring an historic propeller loaned to the airport by Multiflight, was opened at the airport and a book ‘Yeadon Above The Rest’, written by Ken Cothliff about the airport and its history, was launched. Multiflight was officially thanked for helping with the book and also for contributing to the exhibition.
Later this week a magnificent Lancaster Bomber is due to make a flyover of the airport, which many people are looking forward to. This is organised to take place on Thursday, October 20th.
Here are some stunning pictures from the flyovers yesterday – taken by Karen Spencer from Multiflight (Karen Spencer Photography).
